Opportunity is Knocking

My cat, Millie, always wants to be on the other side of the door.  Any door!  The bathroom door, the door to the deck, the bedroom door, you name it, she wants on the other side.

Yes, it can drive me bonkers, having to let her in and out and back in again. But I wondered,  WHY does she consistently want to be on the other side of the door?

Is there something better on the other side of the door?  Or is it just plain old curiosity?

Look out! Curiosity killed the cat, or so the saying goes.

Well, my curiosity got the best of me and that got me thinking. Millie just might be onto something.

Maybe everyone should always strive to be on the other side of the door.

Why? Because opportunity is knocking.

Maybe Millie wants to be on the other side of the door because of all the opportunity, intrigue and adventure that awaits her.  There could be a mouse to play with. A toy to toss around. There’s always something interesting happening and it’s always on the other side of the door.

I believe that curiosity of what’s on the other side should apply to human folks as well.

One woman looking around a door. Opportunity is knocking and a cat on the other side of the door looking up at her.
When opportunity knocks, are you listening?

Opportunity is Available Everywhere

Opportunity is available everywhere, but are you aware of it?  Are you paying attention?!?

It’s important to listen for it, look for it and recognize it. And, when it comes a-knocking.  Answer the door!

Open that door wide, step through it and into the wild world of opportunity. Leave that dull, snoozefest of your comfort zone.

When an opportunity presents itself, go for it!!  Immediately. Not maybe later, or I’ll think about it – just do it! Hesitation is the killer of dreams. Instead, make the decision. Commit to the “yes” and take that first step.

Yes, it might be difficult. And yes, the first step is the hardest, but is it worth it?  Well, that step could bring you closer to your goal or dream life. So, absolutely yes, it is worth it!  And when you take into consideration it is only one small step, how bad could it be?

So, when opportunity knocks, what are you going to do?  Yes, that’s right.  Answer it.

Pay Attention to Any Opportunity

I decided to give it a try and pay attention to any opportunity that might present itself.  Lo and behold, it came knocking!

For many years I’ve been interested in working on my communication skills. During COVID, I dabbled in virtual Improv classes and joined Toastmasters. Both of them taught me valuable lessons in communicating better.

But I stopped going when I returned to work.

Recently, I had been thinking again about Improv classes and how much fun it would be to take another class. Well, a week later – thud, thud. Opportunity came a-knocking.

I saw an ad in the newspaper for a free Improv workshop and immediately registered.  Opportunity knocked and I answered that door with enthusiasm!

I’m so glad I took the step to participate. The class was a blast and reignited my desire to continue my communication journey.

Desire and Longings

Is there any particular desire tugging at the back of your mind?

What are you longing for?

Maybe an opportunity is right around the corner.

Do you want to be more healthy? Sign up for a 5K, start a walking group in your neighborhood, take a healthy cooking class.

Do you loath going to work each day? Maybe it’s time to consider a career change, get a new certification, retire, take a class to learn a new skill.

These longings are YOU telling YOU to do more of something.

Pay attention!  When you do, you’ll begin to notice opportunities becoming available to you. This will get you that much closer to a life you love living!  And this is your one life.  Wouldn’t you rather live it the way you want?

I heard someone once say, “If you live to be 90, do you want to have lived 90 years or will you have lived the same year 90 times?”  Wow!  If that isn’t a gut punch, wake up call!

When you make a decision of what you long for, you’ll be amazed at what shows up to help get you to your goal.

What Does Opportunity Look Like

So, what does opportunity look like?

It could be in the form of an invitation. Or an ad you see online or in the paper. Or a flyer in your mailbox.  It can show up within a casual conversation with a friend, co-worker or acquaintance. Keep your ears and eyes open for these opportunities.  Some knock loudly, some are more quiet.  But for each one that shows up, jump at the chance and take advantage of it.

Why? Because.

Opportunities help you discover new interests or skills. They can alleviate boredom and give you something challenging to work towards. They can help build confidence or a renewed sense of purpose.  Not only that, they offer really cool experiences. And personal growth.

It’s all positive goodness. And you’re sure to benefit!

Aren’t you curious about what adventure might be waiting for you?

I know I am. Speaking of curiosity, the next time my curious cat, Millie, wants to get on the other side of the door, I’m tagging along.

Cheers,

Kathleen
